Two eyes glowing in the dark

The cat makes no light of its own

Why do cats' eyes glow in the dark?

Deep in the eye sits a mirror, the tapetum lucidum, bouncing the light a second time onto the cells that catch it

What comes back to you is the leftover they missed

They need six times less light than you do

But that mirror has a cost

The light that rebounds smears the image a little

The cat sees at night, just a bit blurry

It isn't a stare that switches on

It's the night handed back to you
