Why does your dog circle 2 or 3 times before lying down?

Because it's replaying a scene from 30'000 years ago.

Wolves would flatten grass to hollow out a nest — and flush out insects and snakes in the process.

They'd end up with their nose into the wind.

The nose is the sentinel.

Circling is a full sweep of every scent… before closing their eyes.

There's also the warmth of the ground.

Their place in the pack.

And — maybe — Earth's magnetic field.

That part's in the article.

Fourteen hours of sleep a day.

Tens of thousands of circles in a lifetime.

Always on grass that no longer exists.
